International scientific conference Political Power in Josephus on Reformed theological faculty of University of J. Selye
The conference of the Josephus Research Institute, which is an integral part of the Reformed Faculty of Theology of J. Selye University, and concluded on Friday, had focused on the representation of political power in the works of the ancient Hellenistic-Jewish historian Flavius Josephus. While the depiction of political power can become strikingly relevant—and even oppressive—in everyday life, the conference examined this issue from a scholarly perspective and specifically through the lens of historiography.
Organizing the institute’s third international conference may have posed the greatest challenge this year. Two of our international speakers cancelled their participation a few months before the conference, and in one case, due to the situation in Israel, it only became clear in the week before the event that the speaker would still be able to attend. Despite these difficulties, this year’s meeting ultimately became memorable thanks to excellent presentations, a pleasant atmosphere, and friendly conversations. Our speakers arrived in Komárno from five countries. The presentations, delivered in German and English, were accompanied by engaging discussions. On the final day, the program even included a museum visit.
According to our guests, they greatly enjoyed their time at our university and indicated that they would gladly visit again if the opportunity arises. Creating such an opportunity, however, depends on us. As is our tradition, we once again chose the topic of our conference to be held in two years during the final shared dinner: “The Law and Justice in Josephus.”
We will once again attempt to publish the conference papers with the Berlin-based publisher de Gruyter, as was the case with our two previous conferences.
Thus, those who were unable to attend this year’s event will be able to study the presented papers next year.
